RCN Dementia project: survey on the experience of
care in general hospitals

Dear Sir/ Madam

The Royal College of Nursing is currently leading a project to help improve the care of people with dementia in general hospital settings. The project is being supported by the Department of Health and is being undertaken jointly with other professional bodies and voluntary sector organisations.

Are you someone living with dementia, or a family member/friend?

Do you have direct experience of care in a hospital setting?

If so, we would like to hear your views about what works, what makes it difficult and what really makes a difference. The responses you provide will help in developing practical resources & guidelines and help influence the way dementia care is delivered in these settings.

For your chance to win £100 of John Lewis vouchers and to help us learn more about your experience of care in hospital, please take a few moments to complete the survey which can be accessed online by clicking on the following link: http://www.employmentresearch.co.uk/dementia_carers.htm

If preferred you may complete the survey by hand by printing it off directly from our website: www.rcn.org.uk/dementia

- and returning it to Nikki Mills (Dementia Project Administrator),
20 Cavendish Square, London
W1G 0RN
nikki.mills at rcn.org.uk
Tel. 020 7647 3757.

Alternatively, we can send you a paper copy in the post along with a pre-paid envelope. Please contact Nikki Mills as above.

We are keen to get as many responses as possible so please do feel free to circulate this information as widely as possible. We are also attaching a flyer to promote the survey so if you are member of a group or organisation where you can display this,  we would be most grateful.

The closing date for the survey will be Thursday 16th June 2011

If you need any further information about the project then please contact Nikki Mills (as above) or Rachel Thompson (Dementia Project Lead) using the contact details below.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes

Rachel

Breads and Vegetables evil or good

Breads and Vegetables? What do these have in common? Not much. The reason that we want to consider these two staples of a diet is for opposite reasons. Breads are a nightmare for many people trying to cut down on the carbs in their diet. There is good reason to cut the carbs as most [...]

Stay Forever Young

STAY FOREVER YOUNG

MAY 23, 2011May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Bob DylanAs I have learned, inspiration can come from the most unlikely places when you least expect it. It was a lovely spring evening, and Alida and I thought we would enjoy the cool, cloudless weather on the Upper West Side of Manhattan before we entered the theater for a much-anticipated Paul Simon concert. We found a vacant bench between the two sides of Broadway, the theater?s bright-lit marquee shining behind us, and happened to sit down next to a friendly older couple closer to our moms? age. As we were soon to learn, their names were Roberta and Richard, in from Staten Island to see if they could scalp tickets to the concert. To my surprise, Roberta engaged us in a conversation about the evening?s concert, and we began to chat about our mutual love for Mr. Simon, the highs and lows of his remarkable career. When Bob Dylan?s name came up, I remarked on the extent to which his voice, as evidenced by his recent appearance on the Grammy Awards, was shot. Roberta, with her curly magenta locks and gravelly cigarette voice, said firmly, ?But he?s ?Bob,?? which explained so much, while Richard with his peppery beard, nodded in enthusiastic agreement. We went on to discuss our shared appreciation for Neil Young (one of my top three ever) and Leonard Cohen (the way the 75-year-old singer from Canada had gotten down on his knees at a recent concert in a quasi-religious prayer position was most impressive; a shame, though, about his manager stealing all his money a while back). As we said our goodbyes and made our way to the theater, it occurred to me: I want to be as passionate about music, about all of the things I am interested in now, when I get to Roberta?s and Richard?s age and beyond. Just because we grow older doesn?t mean we have to relinquish the objects that inspire us and excite us about life. With my father?s recent passing, I have become acutely aware of our mortality, our limited time here on earth. It is up to us to make the best of the moments we are fortunate enough to have. I hope you are making the most of your time. Leave yourself open to learning and change and let me know if I can work with you to help you maximize your life.Have a rewarding, productive week.Peace,
Marc
