To Tax or Not to Tax Sugary Beverages: The Public
Has Spoken. Sort of.

Taxing sugary drinks still remains a hot topic, and this time the discussion centers around the public's opinion. How many American people were in favor of "sin taxes" on sodas and junk food? The results may surprise you.

One More to Go

6_23One more day to go…. until I am finally finished studying for Step 2 CK.  I take it on Friday… and I cannot wait.  That doesn’t mean I feel 100% ready (I don’t know if you ever REALLY feel 100% ready for a USMLE exam), but I do know that I’m studied out.  I’m hoping [...]

Seeing Standards: A Visualization of the Metadata
Universe

The sheer number of metadata standards in the cultural heritage sector is overwhelming, and their inter-relationships further complicate the situation. This visual map of the metadata landscape is intended to assist planners with the selection and implementation of metadata standards.

Each of the 105 standards listed here is evaluated on its strength of application to defined categories in each of four axes: community, domain, function, and purpose. The strength of a standard in a given category is determined by a mixture of its adoption in that category, its design intent, and its overall appropriateness for use in that category.

The standards represented here are among those most heavily used or publicized in the cultural heritage community, though certainly not all standards that might be relevant are included. A small set of the metadata standards plotted on the main visualization also appear as highlights above the graphic. These represent the most commonly known or discussed standards for cultural heritage metadata.

Sensors Help Multiple Sclerosis Patient Walk
Without Falling

(Springfield) -- New technology is helping victims of multiple sclerosis, stroke or traumatic brain injury move around.

Bonnie Bell was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 14 years ago. There's no cure for the disease but medication can slow the effects.

It took something larger than a pill, though, for Bell to stay on her feet.

At 50 years old, Bell says she won't be sidelined by M.S.

"I decided I was simply going to live life to the fullest," Bell says. "Whatever I needed to do in order to live every second of that life to the fullest, I was going to do."

But the ordinary act of walking became a burden.

"About four years ago I started needing the cane all the time," Bell says."

She has what doctors call a "foot drop."

"The messages from my brain telling the toe of my foot to raise, which yours does automatically without even thinking, just doesn't happen with mine," Bell says.

"Up here is the cuff," Cox Health physical therapist Chris Glenn says.

Technology called Bioness L-300 prevents the foot from dropping.

"This device will emit an electric current from the nerve into the muscle," Glenn says.

The cuff sends one message to the foot.

The New Old (man) Math

Having a fifteen year old step-daughter, I have heard a lot about the new math over the years.Today, I learned a new fact from my Dad about his bathroom habits that could be considered old man math.I asked him if he went #2 (we record this on his pill sheet daily to make sure his digestive system works efficiently) or just a #1. I went #1 and #2 He replied. So that's a #3? I clarified. I don't think I've ever done a #2 without doing a #1 at the same time. He said. So basically, there is no #2, just #1 and #3, huh? That's right. Dad confirmed.Since Dad moved in with me, I have definitely learned something new every day, whether I want to or not!
