More risk factors added to breast cancer list

Filed under: Breast Cancer, Prevention, Daily news

Simply being female puts all women at risk for breast cancer. That and age, race, family history, personal history, genetic make-up, when they had children, when they reach menopause, and a whole host of other possible factors.

Now U.S. doctors are officially calling body mass index, breast density, and alcohol consumption predictors of the disease, says Therese Bevers, medical director of the Cancer Prevention Center, at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Bevers helped write updated guidelines for the prevention of breast cancer and presented them at the 12th annual National Comprehensive Cancer Network in Hollywood, Florida on Friday.

The guidelines, featuring the revised list of risk factors, also offer treatment options for women -- including bilateral mastectomy for women who have tested positive for the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 as well as possible medical treatments with drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene.

Thought for the Day: Some berry good news

Filed under: All Cancers, Research, Cancer prevention foods, Daily news, Thought for the Day

Of 1,500 foods tested in a University of Oslo study, blackberries were identified as nature's top cancer fighter.

Blackberries apparently have the highest antioxidant content per serving of any food tested. And a compound found in fresh blackberries appears to stop the development of skin tumors and lung cancer cells.

Think about this:

This sweet and juicy fruit, available year-round but plentiful and perfectly potent in April and May, was promoted in a television commercial that aired during the recent Michigan-Ohio State football game.

Ohio State University is a recipient of federal grants to study the health effects of blackberries, and the student who appeared in the TV ad plugged the school's research into the cancer fighting effects of blackberries. Now that's some good press.

Eating Low Calorie at Panera Bread

We recently updated our Low Calorie Fast Food page to include Panera Bread. Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed at the calorie count when we went through the nutrition guide at Panera Bread, because we really like the restaurant. Many of the sandwiches will not do a dieter any favors.

There are two sandwiches, however, that would work for dieters. The Smoked Turkey Breast has just 380 calories if you ask for the Lower-Carb Italian bread. The Mediterranean Veggie works if you ask for no cheese and request either the Lower-Carb Italian Bread or the Pumpkin Seed Loaf (which is our favorite). Just be sure to ask for fruit instead of chips. For those who really want chips, Panera Bread does carry baked Lays - you just have to ask.

The Fandango salad is listed at 390 with cheese. We advise saying no to the cheese and yes to the fat-free raspberry dressing.

A pleasant surprise came from the breakfast menu. The Banana Nut Muffin has just 230 calories and 11 grams of fat. Add a cup of coffee or a small orange juice and you're still within the 300-calorie range for breakfast - which is really good for eating out.

Finally, we also mention the fruit cup. Full of vitamins and just 70 calories.
