As the slides from Milton Keynes and DTMD 2011 are posted, here below are the slides from February. There are some 'artifacts' in there - the question marks were included then replaced by the text as part of the animations (as with the stick figures). The Colombia slides provided the template for the ten minute talk last Thursday. It was a very useful experience, exercising discipline to cram sufficient explanation in to cover the slides in the brief time available. No time for animations. The Chairs for the sessions did a great job, providing a 3 minute warning.
Colombia remains a real highlight: three of the slides are in Spanish thanks to Luz Stella Saray and Prof. Wilson Canon Montanez for their translation skills. (Any mistakes are mine in data transfer / formatting).

The next event to prepare for is Dublin in November: a poster. This will really be different and I need to see what production / printing resources I can access, taking portability into account.

Last week, I kicked off Month 2 of the Insanity workout, and it was a doozy; this week went much more smoothly, despite a one-day break due to a massive blackout in Southern California. As I mentioned last week, Month 2 workouts are significantly longer and more difficult than those in one. Expect to sweat a lot more in Month 2, and higher hydration requirements as a result. In addition to the giant mason jar of water I keep on hand during my workouts, I’ve also added a 20-ounce glass of water fortified with an electrolyte/hydration tablet to give me an extra little kick.
Week 8 of the Insanity workout also sees the return of Cardio Abs and Core Cardio & Balance, bringing the total number of low-impact workout days to two. I found this week’s workouts well-balanced, but challenging.
The following was my schedule for the second week of the second month on the Insanity workout:
This challenging workout lives up to its name, with plenty of jumps and plyometric moves to challenge your muscles. New twists on standard Insanity exercises in this DVD include squat push-ups, wide in-and-out abs, V push-ups on one leg, power push-ups, globe twists instead of jumps and balance push-ups.
Like many plyometric exercises, the drills in this DVD were easy to do but exceptionally challenging to master. I performed much better the second time through this DVD than the first.
I’ve got two weeks left in the Insanity workout, and as I alluded to last week, my scale is the least of my motivators. If you’re reading this and are the sort of person who uses weigh-ins as a motivator — and your mood is highly dependent on improvement on the scale — here’s my suggestion: forget the scale. Instead, use weekly snapshots and take your measurements each month.
By these metrics, the steady improvement on each Fit Test, and how great I feel overall, my Insanity results have been promising, motivating and pretty mind-blowing. My upper abdominals are now carved out, and my obliques become more defined each day. My limbs are toned and trim, and I’m even seeing my face and neck slim down.
Despite all this, I can’t help but get bummed when I step on the scale and see that I’ve only lost 6 pounds in two months. This week, I took the battery out of my scale as a protest — I don’t plan to step on it until I write next week’s wrap-up. As a final control, I’m also going to keep a food diary this week, as I think my diet is probably the culprit of my lack of weight loss.
