Diabetes Discussion - 7 Steps to Prevent Diabetes

Tip! Any one of the parents,(or both)suffering from diabetes.

Diabetes is prevalent than ever and 95% of cases diagnosed are type 2 diabetes. Although for some the development of diabetes is inevitable, perhaps due to hereditary and other factors, for the vast majority it can be prevented by taking some these 7 simple steps…

Before diabetes type 2 becomes fully developed you go through a stage known as pre-diabetes. This is where you start to show some of the symptoms, which if ignored, can lead to full blown diabetes.

Make these 7 action points part of your daily routine and you could stop this disease happening to you:

1) If you are overweight you risk developing diabetes. Reduce the amount of food on your plate so you gradually eat less and start to lose weight. Drink a glass of plain water or a sugar-free drink before your meal to take the edge of any hunger pains.

Tip! Wear an ID bracelet announcing your have diabetes, and also carry a small card saying so in the local language of the places you will be visiting.

2) Reduce the amount of fat you are eating; grill or bake foods instead of frying; use low-fat spreads and reduced fat meals.

3) Check the Glycemic Index of the food you are eating - knowing what each food contains helps maintain your blood-sugars, which in turn can prevent the full onset of diabetes.

Tip! Eight out of ten people living with diabetes are overweight.

4) Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. If you keep a bottle of water with you and sip frequently you’ll be surprised how much you do drink throughout the day.

Tip! 8 million African Americans have diabetes.

5) If you are feeling peckish choose a healthy snack rather than a chocolate bar.

6) Use skimmed rather than full-fat milk in hot drinks.

7) Exercise is good for health. But if you are not use to exercise then start in moderation. 15 minutes gentle walking each day will ease you into a regular exercising pattern.

All of these action points are also the ones that diabetics are advised to take - if you take them now you might be able to prevent irreparable damage to your health.

Diabetes Discussion - 7 Diabetes Foot Care Tips

Tip! Your chance of developing diabetes is higher if you have a close relative, such as a parent or sibling with diabetes.

If you have diabetes information about how to manage your condition is vital to your well being.

If you don’t look after your feet you run the risk of developing sores or infections that could, in the worst case scenario, lead to amputations. As happened to my father-in-law. Reduce your risk of infection or amputation by incorporating these 7 foot care tips…

Diabetes, the Vitamin&Mineral Connection. eBook describing likely causes & cures of diabetic symptoms.

1) Check your feet daily - especially if you have low sensitivity or no feeling in your feet. Sores, cuts and grazes could go unnoticed and you could develop problems leading to amputations.

2) Don’t go around barefoot, even indoors. It’s easy to tread on something or stub your toes and cut yourself. Protect your feet with socks/stockings and
shoes/slippers.

3) Be careful if you have corns or calluses. Check with your doctor or podiatrist the best way to care for them.

4) Wash your feet daily in warm, not hot water. And don’t soak your feet (even if you’ve been standing all day) because it could dry your skin and form cracks or sores.

5) Take extra care to dry your feet completely, especially between your toes. These are natural moisture traps - leaving them damp or wet could create all sorts of problems.

6) Exercise your legs and feet regularly. Even when sitting you can rotate your ankles; wiggle your toes or move your legs up and down. These all keep your blood circulation flowing and helps to minimize the risk of foot problems.

7) Get your feet professionally checked, at least once a year, for sensitivity and signs of any problems. You can usually arrange this when you have your annual check up for your AC1 levels (blood glucose levels over a 3-month period), blood pressure and cholesterol.

Take constant care of your feet. Get help from a relative or professional; Doctor, diabetic nurse or podiatrist if you are not able to bend when trimming nails or checking for sores. Taking these simple actions will help you reduce the risk of painful problems.

Tip! Also get a prescription for your insulin or other diabetes medication. Even though you should have enough syringes, strips and medication to last for the duration of your trip, it’s always good to have a prescription in case you lose them, they become spoiled because of extreme weather conditions, or your trip lasts longer than you original planned.

Diabetes Discussion - 5 Diabetes Travel Tips

Tip! The Mind/Body Diabetes Revolution, Richard S. Surwit, Ph.

Planning ahead when you travel reduces stress. This is particularly important for a diabetic. These 5 diabetes travel tips are simple to implement and crucial to your diabetic management and are particularly important if you are traveling abroad.

1) Have a pre-travel check-up. Make sure your A1C blood sugar levels; your blood pressure and your cholesterol levels are OK. Get the appropriate shots for any country you plan to visit.

2) Wear a diabetes medical ID. Ideally it should be in the language spoken in the country you’re visiting. Not everyone speaks your language and you don’t want medical problems through misunderstandings.

Tip! Your chance of developing diabetes is higher if you have a close relative, such as a parent or sibling with diabetes.

3) Keep your medication and glucose snacks in your hand-luggage. Check-in baggage does, unfortunately, go astray. Don’t risk your diabetes medication by packing it in your main luggage.

4) Keep your medication in its original box, complete with pharmacy labels. It will prevent misunderstandings about why you are carrying drugs and, if you are on insulin, syringes.

Tip! Avoid intake of excess salt, which increases blood pressure and aggravates the problems of diabetes.

5) Be aware of time zone changes, especially when altering your watch. Remember when you travel east your day becomes shorter; if you travel west your day becomes longer. You may need to alter the timings of your medication.

Tip! 8 million African Americans have diabetes.

Traveling need not be traumatic. A sensible attitude and a bit of pre-travel planning can make things go far more smoothly.

Crohn’s Disease and Stress

Tip! Floss every single day. Pay special attention to flossing just below the gum line for reversing periodontal gum disease.

It was so tough in those early years. Not knowing what was wrong. I didn’t know what to think. Was I going crazy? The doctor said I have a nervous stomach. I’m not a nervous person.

Then I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Even though it’s a chronic disease without a cure, it was a relief to know what was wrong. But then the reality set in. How was my life going to change?

And change it did. In 1985 I was admitted into a hospital suffering from a stomach obstruction. A surgeon had to remove a foot and a half from my small intestines. The pain was terrible. I never, repeat never , want to go through that pain again. Ever.

Heart Disease Secrets Revealed. How to Save Your Life from Heart Disease, Quacks And Doctors. A Self Help Guide Without Drugs & Surgery.

After going through the pain of an operation, knowing that people with Crohn’s Disease can have more than one operation, I couldn’t help but wonder what I could do to help my situation? It occurred to me that, in the least, I could learn to handle the stress from the disease and the stress from life itself. I knew that stress, in and of itself, could cause my symptoms to worsen.

No, the stress didn’t cause Crohn’s Disease, but it sure could affect the amount of pain I would experience. I knew it was possible for me to deal with my stress better than I had dealt with it in the past. Before the operation, I was fairly motivated to work at controlling my stress. After the operation, I was highly motivated. I was determined to do everything in my power to improve my situation.

Tip! Rinse with mouthwashes or oral rinses daily. These products help kill bacteria lodged beneath the gums and aid in reversing gum disease.

So how could I handle life’s stress better? I had to learn what I could about dealing with stress and to then develop the necessary skills to make it happen. I learned about the close relationship between relaxation and stress relief. I learned to meditate, I learned to set reasonable expectations about my life and desires, and I learned to be more objective about what was happening to me physically and mentally.

Breakthrough Crohn’s Disease Guide.

I’ve come to the conclusion that people with Crohn’s Diseases can do a lot to help themselves with the stress in their life. Not only can we do a lot to help ourselves, but we can also get support from loved ones as well as others going through the same circumstances.

How To Prevent-Even Cure Heart Disease. How to prevent-even cure Heart Disease-without drugs or surgery.

I have three steps to offer others to help them control the stress in their lives. The first is to learn to meditate, the second is to learn visualization and the third is to get support.

By watching my emotions closely, I could know quickly when the stress in my life was building up too fast. I could then take a little time to meditate. I learned the different strategies of meditation and found one that worked good for me.

In addition to meditation, I learned visualization. Whenever I felt myself getting stressed out, I could visualize myself at St. Simon Island, a place I love and go to once a year. Just thinking of the different locations on the Island, I could feel myself relax. And with practice I’ve got quite good at visualization.

Tip! Get enough rest A woman with cardiac disease needs more rest than the average pregnant woman. Rest lessens the strain of the increased burden of the pregnant woman’s heart.

Finally, there’s the Crohn’s Disease message boards on the internet. What a wonderful resource they are. To be able to talk with people who are going through the same situation. You can’t put a price on that. It’s invaluable. I highly recommend everyone with Crohns Disease to use this resource.

I believe that anyone with Crohn’s Disease (or any chronic disease) can improve their life by taking the time to learn and implement the three part strategy I’ve outlined above. It’s has worked wonderfully for me and I believe it can work for others as well.

Crohn’s Disease - a Brief Overview

Tip! Get enough rest A woman with cardiac disease needs more rest than the average pregnant woman. Rest lessens the strain of the increased burden of the pregnant woman’s heart.

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract - from the mouth all the way through to the anus. As a disease, it can be difficult to diagnose due to its similarity to other inflammatory disorders such as ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel syndrome. Crohn’s Disease usually causes inflammation in the lower small intestine, known as the ileum. The inflammation goes deep into the wall of the intestine causing pain and diarrhea.

It is not known what causes Crohn’s disease, although it is thought that it may be heredity in nature or the result of a virus or bacterium invading the body. To date no definitive answer has been provided. It effects both males and females and people suffering with this disease also tend to have immune system abnormalities, although whether this is a cause or a result of the disease is unknown. One thing that has been established is that Crohn’s Disease is not caused by stress, although emotional distress can exacerbate the symptoms.

Tip! Make sure to have great water quality. Since poor water quality is the greatest case of fish disease and death you’ll want to be diligent about your tank maintenance and partial water changes.

Symptoms most commonly experienced by sufferers are severe abdominal pain, accompanied by diarrhea. Some also report bleeding from the rectum, weight loss and fevers. Children who suffer with Crohn’s may experience some developmental and growth delays due to the lack of essential vitamins and minerals absorbed into the body.

Due to it’s similarity to other inflammatory diseases and syndromes determining if a patient is actually suffering with Crohn’s disease requires a thorough physical exam and a number of tests to be carried out. These can include blood tests to check for anemia and providing stool samples to check for blood which could indicate an infection or bleeding in the intestines. Further, more invasive tests can also be required, for example drinking a barium liquid and having a series of x-rays taken which will highlight any inflammation or abnormalities. A colonoscopy may be required to confirm the diagnosis as Crohn’s disease. In this case an endoscope is inserted into the anus and up into the large intestine to look for bleeding or inflammation. A small sample of tissue may be taken at this point for further analysis. Once Crohn’s disease has been confirmed further tests may be needed to determine the extent of the inflammation.

Tip! Rinse your mouth with a good antibacterial mouthwash for at least a full thirty seconds twice each day. This will help reach bacteria trapped in pockets below your gum line, aiding in reversing periodontal gum disease.

There is no actual cure for Crohn’s disease, although some people, through proper management, can be free of symptoms for extended periods. The treatment for Crohn’s disease varies from person to person as it depends on the severity of the disease and the area effected. Typically, all treatments aim to reduce the inflammation, relieve the pain, diarrhea and bleeding and ensure that the sufferer has the correct nutritional intake. There are three main ways of achieving these goals, medication, surgery or dietary changes.

Common Procedures in Acid Reflux Surgery

Tip! Raising the head of the bed is an effective acid reflux treatment. It is useful for nocturnal acid reflux symptoms and reduces sensitisation that results in problems during the day.

Although acid reflux can be controlled through the means of medical treatments and appropriate diet, some people who suffer from severe forms of the condition may require acid reflux surgery. Acid reflux has a recidivating character and surgery is the best means of fully overcoming the condition. There are several medical procedures in acid reflux surgery and the most effective ones are Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, also known as Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication and Intraluminal Endoscopic surgery. These surgical procedures are both considered to be safe and patients usually recover quickly after the operation.

Acid reflux (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) is a physiological condition that usually occurs due to inappropriate activity of the lower esophageal sphincter (muscular valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach), allowing the content of the stomach to reflux into the esophagus and throat. In normal conditions, the esophageal lower sphincter should be able to prevent the regurgitation of the stomach acids into the esophagus.

Tip! While most people only think of foods to avoid for acid reflux, there are other measures you can take as well to make your life more comfortable. Elevate the head of your bed.

The sphincter normally acts like a barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, sealing the walls of the esophagus in order to protect the organ from the digestive fluids produced by the stomach. However, due to abnormal pressure at the lower end of esophagus, weakness of the esophageal lower sphincter, abnormal positioning of the esophagus inside the body or inconstant muscular contractions of the sphincter, the digestive fluids produced by the stomach are allowed to enter into the esophagus and the throat. Acid reflux surgery can correct the actual causes of the condition, normalizing the activity of the lower esophageal sphincter and therefore preventing the access of gastric acids to the superior levels of the esophagus.

Tip! Watch your diet. Fatty foods, spicy foods, onions, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine-containing beverages, alcohol and carbonated beverages frequently cause acid reflux.

Acid reflux surgery involves simple medical procedures and it provides permanent results for people who are constantly affected by the condition. Acid reflux surgery is recommended for people with chronic forms of acid reflux, but it is also suitable for other patients with less serious forms of the condition.

The most common form of acid reflux surgery is fundoplication. This form of acid reflux surgery involves tightening the walls of the esophagus in the region adjacent to the stomach, thus increasing the pressure near the lower esophageal sphincter. By increasing the pressure at the union point between the esophagus and stomach, acid reflux surgery prevents the content of the stomach from being regurgitated upwards, inside the esophagus and the throat. One other method used in acid reflux surgery involves tightening the esophageal valve. By doing so, the valve will be able to efficiently seal the esophagus, preventing the reflux of gastric acid inside it.

Tip! Prescription Medications: Those who need relief from chronic heartburn (acid reflux) can consult a doctor or other qualified health care professional. They may prescribe more potent or different medications than those sold over-the-counter in stores.

Intraluminal endoscopic acid reflux surgery basically involves the same medical procedures, but performed through the means of an endoscope. This form of acid reflux surgery is very quick and its risks are minimal. The majority of patients recover rapidly after this form of acid reflux surgery and they usually don’t require post-operatory treatment.

Thanks to medical advance and the multitude of modern treatments available these days, acid reflux surgery can be performed in a quick, safe and effective way.

http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com is one of the best acid reflux information sites on the net. Visit it if you are looking for great information on acid reflux symptoms, acid reflux diet, acid reflux surgery and many more.

Tip! Smoking makes acid reflux symptoms worse, especially in children. Nicotine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter allowing acidic stomach contents to reflux up into the esophagus.

Crohn’s disease is often confused with other inflammatory bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, thus making it difficult to diagnose. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease is characterized by an inflammatory reaction throughout the entire thickness of the colon and bowel wall. This inflammation can penetrate deeply into the affected organ, causing pain and diarrhea.

Hope For Healing Canine Liver Disease. Alternative Treatment for Healing Canine Liver Disease.

Symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding (which may lead to anemia), weight loss, malabsorption syndrome and nutritional deficiencies. The onset of Crohn’s disease is typically between the ages of fourteen and thirty. Cases of this disorder tend to be 2-4 times more common in Caucasian whites than non-Caucasian, and 4 times more common in Jews than non-Jews.

Crohn’s disease is typically experienced as flair-up, with attacks occurring every few months to every few years. Over time, if the disease is active, bowel function can gradually deteriorate, with the risk of cancer increasing by 20 fold.

Tip! Floss every single day. Pay special attention to flossing just below the gum line for reversing periodontal gum disease.

Scientists believe that chronic imbalances in the intestinal flora set off a chain of events that, in the end, damages the intestinal mucosa. This theory is strongly supported by the parallel in the number of cases of Crohn’s and other inflammatory bowel disorders and use of antibiotics over the last 50 years. In turn, it has also been found that the incidence of Crohn’s disease is higher in cultures consuming a “western diet”, while it is virtually non-existent in cultures consuming a more primitive diet. Studies also reveal that patients with Crohn’s disease were found to be individuals who habitually ate, prior to the onset of symptoms, more refined sugar, less raw fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber when compared to their healthy counterparts.

How To Prevent-Even Cure Heart Disease. How to prevent-even cure Heart Disease-without drugs or surgery.

While the exact causes of Crohn’s disease is still unclear, there is much that can be done to lessen symptoms and even put this disorder into remission. The goal for treatment of this disorder is to control inflammation, correct nutritional deficiencies and relieve symptoms such as pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

Breakthrough Crohn’s Disease Guide.

Recommendations for Wellness

1) An elimination diet, such as Gottschall’s Specific Carbohydrate Diet have been shown to reduce the symptoms experienced within 3 - 12 weeks.

2) Avoid sugar, both white sugars, and the sugars contained in white flower, white rice etc.

3) Keep a food/flair-up journal. Identify foods you are eating, or your emotional state just before and during a “flair-up”. In time, you may find a pattern forming

4) To reduce intestinal inflammation and begin the healing process, try products such as UltraInflamx - by Metagenics, Robert’s formula - by Phytophamric, or aloe vera juice.

5) Flax seed or fish oils (Omega 3 Oils) have been known to greatly reduce the inflammatory process. If you find you have a hard time digesting them, try freezing the gel caps before taking them.

6) Extra vitamins and minerals are important at this time, especially if you are not absorbing nutrients correctly. Incorporate a liquid meal replacement (one that is loaded with vitamins, minerals and protein, and low on sugar!) into your diet as well as taking a high quality vitamin and minerals supplement. Try to find one that is in a gel casing or capsule.

Tip! Rinse your mouth with a good antibacterial mouthwash for at least a full thirty seconds twice each day. This will help reach bacteria trapped in pockets below your gum line, aiding in reversing periodontal gum disease.

7) Find a good mineral supplement such as Alfalfa, barley greens, liquid chlorophyll or colloidal minerals. Many of these come in a powdered form that you can mix with water or juice.

8) Because of blood loss due to rectal bleeding, and the anemia associated with it, incorporation of additional iron is important. Look to find an herbal iron alternative, especially one that comes in liquid form for better/easier assimilation. If you decide to look to a single herb, Yellow Dock would be my choice. (Consult with your health care provider before introducing additional iron into your diet.)

Tip! Fraquelli M; Colli A; Colucci A; Bardella MT; Trovato C; Pometta R; Pagliarulo M; Conte D. Accuracy of ultrasonography in predicting celiac disease.

9) Starting a program of re-inoculating the intestinal tract with Friendly Bacteria, namely lactoacidopholis can enhance recovery and restore bowel function to normal.

Celiac Disease

Tip! Fraquelli M; Colli A; Colucci A; Bardella MT; Trovato C; Pometta R; Pagliarulo M; Conte D. Accuracy of ultrasonography in predicting celiac disease.

Celiac Disease is a digestive disorder found in patients who are susceptible, with the resulting damage to the small intestine by an interference with the absorption of nutrients. The main culprit with Celiac Disease is a protein called Gluten.

These proteins are found in all forms of main stream and non-mainstream wheat products.

Such as durum semolina, spelt, einkorn, kamut and related grains such as rye, barley, and oats. Damage to the mucus on the surface of the small intestine is caused by a toxic reaction to the ingestion of gluten.

Effects Of

With Celiac Disease the villi, which are the tiny hair-like projections in the small intestine, shrink and eventually disappear. This is the destructive reaction to Celiac Disease. Damaged villi interferes with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and even possibly water and bile salts. If left untreated, damage to the small bowel can be life threatening, posing an increased risk of many disorders.

Tip! Get enough rest A woman with cardiac disease needs more rest than the average pregnant woman. Rest lessens the strain of the increased burden of the pregnant woman’s heart.

If Left Untreated

Symptoms May Include

Abdominal cramping,gas,and bloating.Diarrhea or constipation.
Fluctuation of weight(loss or gain), fatigue, weakness, lack of energy, and all thats associated with with lack of energy.

Possible Treatment

There is no treatment or cure for Celiac Disease.Except for a lifelong adherence to
a strict gluten-free diet. When gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine will begin to heal and general health will be improved. You may want to consider supplementation for any
deficiencies.Consult your doctor about this.

Lifestyle changes are in order for the Celiac sufferer.Become a label reader. If you are unsure about a certian food or ingredient, stay away and learn to identify ingredients that may contain that hidden gluten. Be very diligent

Be aware that hidden gluten can be hiding in some unlikely foods such as low or non-fat products, deli meats, soups, hard candies, soy sauce, even salad dressings. If there is no
label to read such as candy in a dish, stay away, again be very diligent.

Gluten may also be used as a binder in prescription medicines.Again ask youre doctor about Gluten in medications.

Alcohol that’s properly distilled shouldn’t contain any harmful gluten. Research indicates that the peptide is too large to carry over in the distillation process. Beer is a definite no-no.
You might want to consider staying away from alcohol altogether (like the author of this site). This might seem drastic to some but our health is at stake. Wine from the Liquor store
might bother youre stomach, like it does mine possibly because of Sulfites as preserative to give it a longer shelf life. Home made Wine wthout any added ingredients in moderation seems to be O.K.

Tip! Rinse with mouthwashes or oral rinses daily. These products help kill bacteria lodged beneath the gums and aid in reversing gum disease.

Sometimes Gluten products are added to alcohols and Vinegars after the distilling process
and should be avoided intirely. Malt vinegars are not distilled and therefore are not gluten-free. This in a nutshell is what Celiac Disease is. I might have left out some details, I’m not a
doctor. But, I am a Celiac sufferer and I know what Celiac’s go through.

Asbestos And Mesothelioma Connection

Tip! Generally it is deemed that even a slight exposure to asbestos particles leads to mesothelioma. So if these fibres are detected in your house or office, they should be removed as soon as possible and all the materials that came in contact with it should be thoroughly cleansed.

Asbestos are primarily known as the substance which causes the deadly disease Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer in which the internal organs of patients become surrounded by a cancerous coating of cells. Asbestos describes any of a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals of the hydrous magnesium silicate chemical family.

These fibers are often used in cement during construction and though they have been banned in construction in the United States today, their presence at construction sites world wide five and six decades ago are causing medical and legal problems today. Asbestos can take five or six decades to fully display their deadly potential and thus many of the construction workers who absorbed the dangerous chemical in the 1950;s and 1960;s while working, are just now experiencing the effects of the disease. Hence, many of the lawsuits that are being filed for Mesothelioma have to do with the intake of asbestos at construction plants in the 1950’s and the 1960’s.

Tip! Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of Mesothelioma. It starts in the chest cavity (after breathing the particles) before spreading to other areas.

Currently, these asbestos cause a disease for which there is no cure; however, due to the amount of attention that this disease is getting, many top scientists and researchers worldwide are working to develop a cure for the disease. Like many cancers, without continued support and attention, research and funding are not possible.

Are You Pre-Diabetic Do Nuts Prevent Diabetes
Two Interesting Studies

Tip! For reasons not yet clear, Blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians have high rates of diabetes.

Should you be concerned about a high fasting blood sugar if you don’t have diabetes? A normal fasting blood sugar is defined as being below 100. Those who have fasting blood sugars between 100 and 125 are not necessarily diabetic, but carry five times the risk of suffering a heart attack in one year as those with fasting blood sugars below 100. At the 2005 American College of Cardiology meetings, Dr. Beer of France showed that people who have elevated fasting blood sugars are at high risk for heart attacks, even though they may not be diagnosed as being diabetic. Having high blood sugar levels may be an even greater risk or heart attacks than having a high cholesterol.

Tip! Wear an ID bracelet announcing your have diabetes, and also carry a small card saying so in the local language of the places you will be visiting.

Many doctors now feel that 35 percent of Americans become diabetic because they eat too much sugar-added foods and drinks, bread, spaghetti and other refined carbohydrates and that they are overweight. Storing fat, particularly in your belly, puts you as high risk for becoming diabetic and for having a heart attack.

Does eating nuts will lower your risk for diabetes? In one study, risk for type 2 diabetes in women who ate nuts at least five times per week was 30 percent lower than those who rarely or never ate nuts. Nuts contain lots of fat, but most fats in nuts are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are good for insulin sensitivity and serum cholesterol. Before the bad LDL cholesterol can damage arteries, it must first be converted to oxidized LDL. Mono-unsaturated fats form LDL cholesterol that resists oxidation and therefore protects arteries. Nuts are also rich in antioxidant vitamins, minerals, plant protein and dietary fiber. However, nuts are concentrated sources of calories, so rather than adding nuts to your current diet, substitute them for less healthful foods such as bread or red meats.
