I could strikethrough much of the text here:
Earlier this evening I thought "This could not happen at a better time!" Suddenly - or maybe not if I'd checked before - the New Year emphasised the age of the h2cm homepage. It did look poorly.
On the old PC in 2005 I updated the home page using Fireworks, that was the last front-end revision. When I checked in a couple of browsers the formatting of the graphics for the menus was falling apart. The links still worked, but the main image was out-of-kilter.
I actually thought this was good news.
For a short while I put a note up apologising for the mangled look. Anyway, it works out I messed up the Doctype declaration. It looks OK now and I've taken the opportunity to highlight the Colombia conference.
The trip to South America later this month means that I've pushed a short break back to March. I've not many holidays left, but plan to pack laptop, spend a couple of days walking and with Drupal plus HTML5 and CSS3. I'm really enjoying .NET magazine and should subscribe. In December they featured a CD with CSS3 video training with Think Vitamin. It does give you an appetite to tear stuff down and start again...
Just to mention, the communication - dementia care teaching session went very well. Six people - one general nurse and five health care support workers. They helped me too adding to my notes. I'd left out the impact of dementia on eating and drinking, they needed reminding about swallowing. Lots of discussion and questions.
They appreciated the basic SENDER - channel - RECEIVER communication model (and I didn't mention bits and bytes). I managed to create a feedback form too. This and the slides I'll feed into the training group as collectively we try to identify, source and brand learning materials. Not sure as yet about the personalised care session, I'll ring up tomorrow morning.

The connection between Facebook and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia might be stronger than previously thought. Researchers at the University of Haifa polled 249 secular Jewish girls between the ages of 12 and 18 on their media consumption, specifically their exposure to magazines, the Internet and TV.
The girls who spent the most time on Facebook were most likely to suffer from poor body image, anorexia and bulimia. This connection between Facebook and eating disorders was higher than that found when analyzing fashion and music consumption on the Web. Cutting children off from Facebook isn’t the clear-cut answer, however; researchers found that parents who interacted with their children about the content they consumed online were more likely to inspire empowerment:
When parents were aware of what their daughters were seeing and doing on the Internet and conducted a dialogue with them over the content and amount of hours invested, the more protected the girls were from eating disorders; they had a higher feeling of empowerment and a better body image, the researchers found. They concluded that with their involvement, caring and supervision, parents have the ability to influence their daughters? sense of self and minimize their risk of eating disorders.
Part of the connection between Facebook and eating disorders is because more teens are hanging out on social networking sites as opposed to blogs or standalone websites; the pro-ana and pro-mia websites of 2007 have simply evolved into Facebook Groups and Pages. AllFacebook wrote, “Facebook holds up a mirror — make that a magnifying glass — to society and adds visibility to things that already happen. So with respect to eating disorders, social media gives females more opportunity to compare themselves with their peer group and others.”
Although I found several Facebook Pages and Groups that share thinspiration, pro-ana and pro-mia content when I searched this morning, I also found just as many — if not more — that focus on empowerment and anti-eating disorder content. As with the rest of the Internet, seek and ye shall find.

To those persons who worry that our concern with America’s nationwide epidemic of overweight and obesity will lead to some federal government agency haranguing us to become fit and trim, manipulating our food options, and attempting to change our dietary lifestyles, a heads up: It’s already happening. And tens of thousands of Americans are being effected — generally, for the better.
The government agency in question is the United States Army, which recently overhauled its food service and physical fitness programs in the face of several troubling statistics:
The challenge has been to get these sorry specimens into — sometimes literally — fighting trim, and to this end the Army has drastically changed the structure and content of its mess hall. The fried food has been replaced by baked versions. Water, juice and skim milk have supplanted the sodas. The dessert bins now emphasize fruit and yogurt over bakery items. And everything is color-coded, with green for the most healthy items, yellow for the reasonably nutritious choices, and red for items better minimized or avoided. Posters urge diners to “Go Green.” Talk about your nanny state.
One might ask: Why offer the troops any non-green-coded food items at all? Because the Army doesn’t want a lot of those troops sullen and resentful at being force-fed food they don’t care for. It wants troops who understand the difference between good and bad food choices, and elect to make good choices based on their own best interests.
The program seems to be having the desired effect, perhaps aided by the fact that everybody in the dining hall is a volunteer to begin with. It probably also doesn’t hurt that those who opt to eat poorly and become flabby instead can be discharged into a world where regular, dependable paychecks and full medical coverage are hard to come by.

If you think histamines are your nemesis during allergy season, here?s something that might change your perspective. New research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology shows that histamine could be an important molecule to developing new treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS). In the study, the scientists analyzed the role of histamine in an animal model of multiple sclerosis and found that histamine plays a critical role in preventing MS or lessening its effects.
?We hope that our study will help design new therapies for autoimmune diseases and in particular MS, for which there is still not a definitive cure,? said Rosetta Pedotti, MD, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Neuroimmunology and Neuromuscular Disorders Unit at the Neurological Institute Foundation Carlo Besta in Milan, Italy. Six-month progress reports from seven multi-disciplinary teams investigating CCSVI (chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency) in MS indicate that they have established rigorous protocols, are successfully recruiting participants, and are on-track to evaluate and deliver important data when the two-year projects are completed. All seven studies are two years in length but will be closely monitored while in progress in order to expedite clinical trials should the data show it is warranted. The studies were launched on July 1, 2010 with a more than $ 2.4 million commitment from the MS Society of Canada and the National MS Society (USA).Continue reading
